Lexington Mayor offers line-item vetoes on new positions

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has vetoed ten new positions added to the upcoming budget by the City Council. In putting together a budget recommendation, the mayor said her administration carefully vetted new position requests. Gorton made her announcement at the end of Tuesday’s work session.
“I do not want to make choices today that could potentially force us into increasing taxes in the future. And I believe in living within our means,” said Gorton.
Telling Council it’s not personal at all, Gorton said she couldn’t support increasing projected revenues by $750,000 without justification. If Council decides to override the mayor’s vetoes, action would need to be taken before the end of June. An override requires nine votes. Gorton said the Council made some valuable contributions in the budget process. There was no immediate reaction from Council.
