People whose property was damaged by the April 2nd storm have until July 22nd to apply for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Aid is available to homeowners and renters in 11 counties, including Fayette, where Emily Fay is the public information officer for Lexington’s Division of Emergency Management. She said assistance covers damage to homes, vehicles and other property.
“It can be a tree falling on your house, or a wind taking off part of your roof, or even if you had tools in your garage and the garage was damaged and those tools were damaged because of that, that’s also eligible.”
FEMA officials say they’ve streamlined the application process. Fay said help is available for people having trouble with it.
“If you come in person, there’s a bunch of lovely, knowledgeable people in the Disaster Recovery Center next door that are happy to walk you through that process.”
The Disaster Recovery Center is on Cisco Road. Fay said the April 2nd storm caused an estimated $400,000 of damage at the University of Kentucky, $370,000 in damages and response costs for the city, and millions to private property.
