U.S. Department of Commerce awards grant to support employment program in eastern Kentucky

A program to support employment in eastern Kentucky is getting $40 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The grant will be going to the nonprofit Shaping Our Appalachian Region, also known as SOAR.
It will help a program to support local businesses and job placements. That includes finding work for former coal workers and people in recovery.
It’s part of a larger, national program that invests in areas where employment for 25-to-54-year-olds is lower than the national average. It focuses on remote jobs, alongside careers in health care, energy and technology.
The plan will be implemented (synonym) in 12 eastern Kentucky counties, including Bell, Floyd, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Perry and Pike.
