Staff and students working at Baptist Health Richmond will soon have a new tool to improve their skills. The Baptist Health Foundation received a gift of over half a million dollars from the Commonwealth Credit Union to set up a high fidelity simulation lab.
Mindy Blair is the chief nursing officer at Baptist Health Richmond. She said this lab will be incredibly useful for getting new hires ready to go in a safe environment.
“Every new employee that comes to our campus that is hired, we run them through certain scenarios and skill sets for them to be validated and at the same time to make sure they can safely care for patients.”
The funds will be used to purchase high-fidelity simulation manikins and the technology needed to operate them. Clinicians can operate the manikins while staff are working on them and change the scenario as the care is being administered.
Blair said this new lab will set up a great place for students and staff to learn.
“If we need to practice, it is much more reasonable to go ahead and practice in a safe space as not to cause any undo harm or injury. So, having that on board, you can only bring students in while they are there in practice on campus with the faculty.”
The new simulation lab is expected to be up and running by late fall or early winter of this year.
