Fayette public schools welcome students to the classroom on Wednesday

Tens of thousands of students in Fayette County head back into the classroom in two days. Fayette County Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said more than 500 people have been hired for various roles throughout the district. Liggins said a couple of years ago the school board invested in historic raises for teachers and staff and so Fayette County is now a destination district.
“We have the highest starting teacher salary and classified salaries in the Commonwealth when it comes to education and so we’re able to recruit some very talented individuals that want to work with our students,” said Liggins.
Liggins said that’s not to say every single position in the school system is filled. The head of the public school district said the unfilled positions are typically found in high-level math and science in high school and special education.
Often one of the bigger needs when it comes to staffing is in the area of transportation. Liggins said the bus driver numbers are good as the school year gets going.
“We are ready to start transportation. It should run smoothly on day one, with the exception of minor hiccups that happen every single year. But, it certainly will not be to lack of staffing. And so we’re fortunate in that aspect as well,” said Liggins.
