Frankfort’s historic ‘Singing Bridge’ closed indefinitely

These are the tunes played by the Singing Bridge, courtesy of Bubby’s Bistro YouTube channel, before it was closed last week. It’s really more of a hum than a song, but the bridge is a Frankfort landmark the state Transportation Cabinet says averaged about 3,400 vehicles a day. Robin Antenucci is the executive director of the Frankfort-Franklin County Tourist and Convention Commission.
“People come in here and they have heard about it, and they want to go see it, or maybe they want to walk across the river and that kind of thing. And so the fact that it is closed to both traffic and pedestrians without a time frame — that’s the first I’ve heard of that since I’ve lived here.”
The Transportation cabinet closed the bridge last week after a routine inspection deemed it unsafe. Antenucci said she’s concerned about the effect of the closure on motorists and businesses.
“One, just from the logistics of getting to and from the heart of downtown, and secondly, from the businesses on that side of the river. I mean, it’s, it’s an important connective link.”
Frankfort’s mayor said earlier this year, his office applied for a grant that would supply the nearly $10 million in federal and state funds needed to get the Singing Bridge humming again.
