City crews continue to treat and clear roads
News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government
Crews continue to work 12-hour shifts to address priority roads, slick hills, and intersection issues. More salt and Beet Heet have been ordered to ensure the City is well stocked.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for Lexington until 10 am today, Jan. 9. Very cold wind chills or air temperatures as low as five below zero are expected. Limit outdoor activities if possible, and dress in layers that cover all exposed skin.
A Freezing Fog Advisory is also in effect until 10 am today, and visibility could be less than one mile in freezing fog. Motorists are asked to stay alert, drive slowly, and increase their following distance.
While main roads are manageable, neighborhood roads remain snow-covered and slick. Due to the temperature and lack of sunshine, refreezing of roadways is possible, especially on neighborhood roads. With the colder temperatures, there is the possibility that black ice may form on roadways or walkways. Motorists and pedestrians should remain cautious.
All crews involved in snow removal duties are working 24 hours a day in alternating 12-hour shifts. The city’s snow removal plan with street and sidewalk rankings is available at lexingtonky.gov/snow. Get the latest on city snow removal, delays, closings and more at lexingtonky.gov/snowupdates.
Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention
The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has extended its Emergency Winter Weather Plan through Friday morning. The plan focuses on assisting those who are seeking shelter from the cold weather. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call LexCall at 311 to be connected with the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention. After business hours, contact the Street Outreach team at (859) 551-8053 or (859) 556-1870. In case of an emergency, call 911.
Waste Management Update
The City will only collect trash, not recycling or yard waste, for the rest of this week, Thursday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 10. Recycle carts, yard waste carts and yard waste on the curb will not be collected until next week.
The City will collect Monday and Thursday trash on Thursday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday and Friday trash on Friday, Jan. 10. Everyone is encouraged to put their trash cart out the night before their collection day since the trucks will be running a double route and may start early in the morning.
The Haley Pike Waste Management Facility, the Lexington Recycle Center and the Electronics Recycling Center are open on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, January 8 and will return to regular hours on Thursday, Jan. 9.
The Free Trash Disposal Day scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, is still planned for 6 a.m. – noon at the Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station, 1505 Old Frankfort Pike.

Snow Emergency
Mayor Linda Gorton declared a snow emergency for Lexington on Monday. The city’s Emergency Operations Center is partially activated, and all public safety divisions are on 24-hour schedules through Thursday, Jan. 9.
While the declaration does not ban parking on snow emergency routes at this stage, residents are encouraged to avoid parking on these streets if possible. This will help city crews clear the streets more effectively. Snow emergency routes are major streets throughout the city and are marked by signage.
The snow emergency also allows for a delay in the implementation of the city’s ordinance requiring property owners to clear sidewalks.
Public Safety
Between midnight and 6 am today, the Lexington Police Department responded to zero non-injury collisions, zero injury collisions, two traffic hazards, zero escorts and eight calls for motorist assistance. Drivers should allow plenty of time to reach their destination and be reminded to clear their front and rear windshields and mirrors of snow and ice before driving. Motorists are reminded to drive slowly and increase their following distance.
Lexington is expected to have cold conditions with temperature lows in the single digits through Thursday, and drivers should be aware of the possibility of black ice.
The Lexington Fire Department urges residents to use caution with home heating equipment. Space heaters should be at least 3 feet away from combustibles. Generators and grills should never be used inside a home. With the Cold Weather Advisory, encourages residents to stay indoors and dress in layers.
Prolonged exposure to dangerously cold temperatures can put pets in danger. Contact the Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control at (859) 225-9033 to report the mistreatment or neglect of an animal.
Residents can get information on accidents, lane blockages, snow-and-ice trouble spots and road closures through the city’s Traffic Management X account @lexwrecks. They can also view traffic at major intersections in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at lexingtonky.gov/traffic.
