A U.S. Army captain who died in Wednesday’s collision of a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet was a former trainee at Fort Knox.
Rebecca M. Lobach was identified by the Army as one of three soldiers killed in the collision last week outside Washington, D.C. The jet’s 60 passengers and four crew members also died in the crash.
The Army released the names of the two other Black Hawk soldiers on Friday, but withheld Lobach’s name until Saturday at the request of her family.
Lobach served as an Army aviation officer since July 2019 after graduating from the University of North Carolina. She trained at Fort Knox as part of UNC’s ROTC program.
Fellow trainee Davis Winkie called Lobach “brilliant and fearless” in a social media post honoring her.
“Rebecca played a crucial role in helping me navigate the hardest periods of my personal life. Our friend group sustained me and kept me engaged when every fiber of my being wanted to just go numb to this world. I owe her so much,” the post reads.
Lobach earned an Army commendation medal and an achievement medal upon graduating.
She was also a certified sexual harassment and assault response and prevention advocate, and hoped to become a physician after her time in the Army.
