The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council voted to rejoin the National League of Cities (NLC), renewing Lexington’s membership for the first time in 14 years.
Lexington had previously been a member of NLC for 28 years beginning in 1983. 2025 will be the first year of membership since 2011.
The proposal to rejoin NLC was brought forward by Councilwoman Denise Gray and approved unanimously by the full council on October 29, 2024. “I attended my first National League of Cities conference last summer,” she stated. “I was blown away by the amount of useful information I learned and the number of leaders across the nation that I have been able to brainstorm solutions for issues the city of Lexington has been dealing with. This experience taught me that the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government needed to return to the National League of Cities.”
In addition to their annual conferences, the National League of Cities provides many benefits to municipal members, including trainings, workshops, and networking opportunities. These benefits are available to all employees of the member cities.
“I am thrilled to welcome the City of Lexington, Kentucky, back home to the National League of Cities,” said Clarence E. Anthony, CEO and Executive Director of the National League of Cities. “NLC is stronger when the voices of our cities, towns and villages are united. As we work together to strengthen local government, I am confident that having the leaders of Lexington with us will create an even greater impact.”
Council Members are excited to share these tools and resources with city staff as well as reestablish the relationship between LFUCG and NLC.
