City crews continue treating roads, residents urged to travel with caution

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government
Streets & Roads and Water Quality crews have worked continuously throughout the day to treat roadways as snow impacts Lexington. Crews will remain on duty overnight and will continue to monitor and treat streets as necessary. Additional contractors have provided their support in clearing neighborhood streets, clearing downed trees and limbs as needed and helping with sidewalk snow removal in areas where the city is responsible for clearing sidewalks.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Lexington until 7 a.m. Wednesday, February 12. Snow is expected to turn to rain and sleet tonight, with a chance for freezing rain between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. tomorrow. There should be no further accumulation as the temperature will rise slightly tonight. The elevated air and ground temperatures have helped with treatment effectiveness. Rainfall is helping to melt any remaining snow on the roads and will help to clear sidewalks.
All roads are currently open and in good condition. County roads are all open to pavement as well. Residents should remember that previously treated roads can become recovered with snow and ice during storms and may need to be treated additional times to remain clear. Residents should still avoid travel if possible; snow accumulations from today and the possibility of sleet and rain make for hazardous travel conditions throughout the rest of the evening and into tonight.
Between 8 a.m. this morning and 4 p.m. today, the Lexington Police Department responded to 28 non-injury collisions, 4 injury collisions, 9 motorist assists, and 3 traffic hazards. Lexington Police urge residents to avoid all non-essential travel. If travel is necessary, police remind motorists to give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations, increase the distance between yourself and other vehicles, and put your vehicle in a lower gear to get better traction. Motorists and pedestrians alike should be especially careful on bridges and overpasses as they are typically the first surfaces to freeze.
