City crews pretreat roads ahead of winter weather

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government

Streets & Roads and Water Quality crews have pretreated roads with salt brine and Beet Heet in anticipation of winter weather today. On-call staff reported at midnight to begin work and will continue to work throughout the day. City offices will operate under a 2-hour delay for those not involved in snow operations.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Lexington from 4 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, to 7 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12. Heavy snow accumulations between 3 to 5 inches are expected, with the potential for very light ice accumulation. Residents should avoid traveling, if possible, as it may become dangerous. Motorists on a morning commute can expect low visibility while traveling due to snow showers and slick road conditions.

Between midnight and 5 a.m. this morning, the Lexington Police Department was not required to respond to any weather-related incidents or calls. Lexington Police urge residents to avoid non-essential travel. If travel is necessary, police remind motorists to give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations, increase the distance between themselves and other vehicles, and put their vehicles in a lower gear to get better traction. Also, in an emergency, try to have a full tank of gasoline, water, snacks, and other items to help you stay warm in your vehicle.

The Office of Homelessness Prevention & Intervention activated its Emergency Weather Plan on Sunday, Feb. 9, and it will continue through Tuesday, Feb. 11. Activation will be extended as needed. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call LexCall at 311 to be connected with the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention. After business hours, contact the Street Outreach team at (859) 551-8053 or (859) 556-1870. In case of an emergency, call 911.
