City responds to latest round of snow

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government

City crews and contractors worked overnight as the latest round of snow arrived. Given the ongoing snowfall, people are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible. Commuters who do venture out should drive cautiously. Go slow and leave extra room between your vehicle and those in front of you. Use extra caution on bridges and overpasses.

The Winter Weather Warning remains in effect until noon today. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place from 4 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Thursday. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday. Wind chills may fall below zero. Be sure to dress appropriately if heading outside.

Makeup waste collection for those with Monday service is moving forward. Please be patient as trucks will take longer to complete routes today. Those who are missed should leave their carts out until they are emptied. Thursday and Friday may be used to collect missed carts, as needed.

Businesses and apartments with trash and recycling dumpsters should ensure dumpsters remain accessible. Do not block dumpster areas with snow. Locks should be left unlocked or checked to confirm they are not frozen over.

Between midnight and 5 a.m., the Lexington Police Department responded to five non-injury collisions, and four calls for motorist assistance. There were no injury collisions and no traffic hazards reported.

The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention activated its Emergency Winter Weather Plan on Sunday (February 16), currently running through Saturday, February 22. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters.

Residents who see someone in need of shelter can contact LexCall at 3-1-1. After business hours, the Hope Center’s outreach team can be reached at 859-551-8053 or 859-556-1870. In the event of an emergency, please call 9-1-1.
