Mayor Linda Gorton invited all Lexington residents, especially downtown ones, to honor former vice mayor Isabel Yates on Tuesday, March 4. Mrs. Yates died Feb. 26, and her funeral begins at 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Christ Church Cathedral, 166 Market St.

The funeral procession will drive down Main Street between approximately 3:30 and 3:45 p.m. on its way to Lexington Cemetery. “I hope we can line the curbs downtown in Isabel’s honor,” Gorton said. “She helped our city make so much progress.”

Gorton has also ordered flags on all city buildings to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday.

“Isabel was an amazing force for good in our city,” Gorton said. “She saved McConnell Springs – our community’s birthplace, resurrected the Kentucky Theatre, and raised funds for countless community organizations. She also took on really tough issues during her time on Council.”

Mrs. Yates served as a member of the Urban County Council from 1991 – 2002. She was vice mayor from 1998 – 2002.
