Allen Drive to be closed temporarily for stormwater work

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government

Allen Drive will be closed from Parkside Drive to Freeman Drive for stormwater construction beginning on Monday, April 7. The roadway will be reopened by Tuesday, May 6, weather permitting.

Contractors with Lexington’s Division of Water Quality will construct a new culvert under Allen Drive. A culvert is a tunnel that allows water to pass under the road. The current culvert is old and needs to be replaced.

The roadway and sidewalk will be closed on that section of Allen Drive. Parkside Drive, Irene Drive and Freeman Drive can be used to detour around the closure. Drivers are reminded to drive slowly through detour routes and construction areas and to watch for pedestrians and workers. Access to homes in the area will be maintained during construction.

After Allen Drive reopens, stormwater manholes and pipes will be installed in the area of Freeman Drive. Traffic may be affected on Freeman Drive during construction. The project is expected to be completed by December of this year.

This project is part of ongoing improvements to stormwater infrastructure in the Joyland neighborhood. Earlier projects included the construction of a detention basin to hold rainwater near Shandon Drive. This project is part of the City’s Stormwater priority list, which are projects that reduce flooding in neighborhoods.
