News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government

It’s time for the City of Lexington’s annual volunteer tree planting, Reforest the Bluegrass! For the first time since 2008, Reforest will be held at Jacobson Park, 4001 Athens Boonesboro Road. All ages are welcome to plant trees along the trail that runs through the park on Saturday, April 19 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

This year’s Reforest participants will join 18,000 past volunteers who have planted more than 218,000 seedlings and restored more than 200 acres of floodplain in Lexington. No previous tree planting experience is required. Volunteers can enjoy the exhibitor tent with fun activities related to trees, water quality and other environmental topics. Free lunch and a t-shirt are provided. Preregistration is not required, but volunteers must sign a waiver onsite before planting.

This year’s participants will also receive the first ever LexPedition card! These collectable cards will be available at key events such as Reforest the Bluegrass, StreetFest and Truck-a-Palooza. In recognition of Lexington’s 250 celebration, this year’s cards all include the Lex250 logo.

The following weekend, Reforest at Home will continue for its sixth year. On April 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Fayette County residents can pick up free trees at one of three locations: Charles Young Park, 540 East Third Street; Shillito Park, 300 West Reynolds Road; and Jacobson Park, 4001 Athens Boonesboro Road. Both large shade and small flowering tree seedlings will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of two small trees and five trees total per household.

Private and public partners work together to make these events happen. Sponsors of Reforest activities include Green Forests Work, Bartlett Tree Experts, John’s Run/Walk Shop, Kentucky American Water, Kentucky Utilities, Lexmark, Big Bang Customs, Donut Days, Thoroughbred Chapter of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Wild Birds Unlimited and Wild Ones.
