West Maxwell Street to be closed for sewer work

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government

West Maxwell Street from Oliver Lewis Way to South Broadway will be closed to thru traffic Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. beginning Monday, April 28 for sanitary sewer construction.

The Division of Water Quality is replacing the sanitary sewer that runs under West Maxwell Street. The work will be done in phases, starting at Oliver Lewis Way and ending at South Broadway. The entirety of the impacted area will remain closed to thru traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to last until early fall. Motorists are encouraged to use Oliver Lewis Way as a detour.

Metal plates will be placed so that West Maxwell can be reopened to traffic during nights (7 p.m. – 7 a.m.), weekends, major holidays and some weekday events such as University of Kentucky and Fayette County Public School graduations.

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout construction. However, street parking will be unavailable from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday – Friday in active construction areas. Street parking may also be impacted by equipment outside of those times.

The sanitary sewer in this area of town is old and in disrepair. This project will replace the main sanitary sewer that runs down the middle of West Maxwell Street in addition to the smaller lines that lead to homes and businesses in the neighborhood.
