The City of Lexington is currently accepting applicants for the Teachers’ Environmental Academy. Now in its sixth year, participating educators will take part in a week-long workshop focused on environmental challenges in Lexington.

The workshop series is open to kindergarten through 12th grade educators who work in public or private schools in Lexington-Fayette County. Educators with homeschool cooperatives are also welcome to join. Workshops will focus on multi-modal transportation, sustainability, waste management and water quality.

“I had so much fun learning about local environmental practices! We saw firsthand what happens to our recycling, garbage and sewage, we got up close and personal with trucks that unclog sewer lines, and who knew that Fayette County has its own native tree nursery?” said Terry Terry, Upper Elementary science teacher at Providence Montessori. “These experiences made the classroom lesson materials come alive, and I loved meeting other teachers who also wanted to learn.”

Educators are given resources to share what they’ve learned with their students in their classroom. Teachers who complete the Academy by participating in all five days will receive a $500 stipend or have costs for a substitute reimbursed. Participants will tour the Lexington Recycle Center, the Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant and other facilities. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day.

Apply online by Friday, May 16.
