An update on Lexington’s Complete Streets initiatives

In Tuesday’s Council Work Session, Complete Streets Manager Brandi Peacher will provide an update on the City’s Complete Streets work.

In 2022, Council adopted a Complete Streets Policy that set a goal to ensure Lexington streets are safe for all transportation modes — cars, bikes, and pedestrians. A Complete Streets Action Plan was adopted in 2023 that set more specific goals and tasks that the City could achieve, including:

• Creating a Design Manual for LFUCG and developers to use that would set standards for how streets should accommodate all transportation users when building new streets or revamping existing streets

• Setting metrics for how to measure if a new street project is safe for all users

• Developing a community education and input strategy

Starting in 2026, Council will receive detailed implementation updates of the Complete Streets Policy and Action Plan. In 2024, the City started work on a number of tasks that they consider foundational to successfully implement the policy, including hiring a Complete Streets Manager and Vision Zero Coordinator, drafting the Complete Streets Design Manual, including Complete Streets goals in upcoming road projects and documents like the Downtown Master Plan, and more.
