Mayor Linda Gorton and One Lexington today announced 30 “Building Bridges to Opportunity” scholarship winners.

The college scholarships and career and technical education scholarships are funded by a $500,000 award from Team Kentucky’s “Everybody Counts” initiative, which was launched by Gov. Andy Beshear in 2022, to provide high school seniors a pathway to a job, postsecondary enrollment, or both.

“As an education-first administration, we created Everybody Counts to help ensure all Kentucky students can see a pathway toward a brighter future,” Gov. Beshear said. “Today, I am grateful for these courageous students and the future opportunities I hope these scholarships will provide for them in our New Kentucky Home.”

Devine Carama, Director of One Lexington, said, “When we talk about the root causes of gun violence, access to opportunity is at the top of the list. Our Building Bridges to Opportunity initiative not only eliminates barriers to access, but it incentivizes our young people to become the change that they want to see in the systems that represent them.”

Gorton said One Lexington continues to develop ways to help Lexington’s young people find bright futures. “While working with young people and families who are facing violence in their lives today, One Lexington is also sowing seeds to prevent future violence through this scholarship program, and other initiatives,” she said.

The scholarships are awarded in partnership with the Fayette Education Foundation and Blue Grass Community Foundation.

The college “Be the Change” scholarships are for 2025 high school graduates who want to study fields where gun violence is addressed. The career and technical education scholarships are for 2025 high school graduates whose lives have been directly or indirectly affected by gun violence.

The Mayor awarded one-time, $10,000 “Be the Change” scholarships to 18 local students. The scholarships can be used at Kentucky universities.

A $100,000 fund has been set aside for career and technical education scholarships. The 12 scholarships were awarded to 2025 graduates whose lives have been directly or indirectly affected by violence.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Beshear and to the other supporters of this program,” Gorton said. These scholarships will build bridges to opportunity for these young people, and for our community.”
