Volunteer to clean up the Kentucky River

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government

Come take care of the river with us! The annual Kentucky River Clean Sweep will take place this Saturday, June 21. Volunteers will head out in boats on the Kentucky River to collect trash from the twelve miles of river that borders Fayette County.

For over 25 years, new and returning volunteers have spent the third Saturday of June cleaning up the Kentucky River. River Sweep takes place at Kelley’s Landing, the new City park at 8949 Old Richmond Road.

River Sweep participants should gather starting at 8:30 a.m. Arrive no later than 10 a.m. to ensure you have time to go out on the river. Participants will return to shore around noon for a free lunch and a River Sweep t-shirt as a thank you.

Volunteers with their own canoes and kayaks are encouraged to bring them, although you do not have to have your own boat to join the cleanup. City canoes are first-come, first-served through preregistration. Participants with extra room for others are always appreciated!

Trash bags, gloves and limited numbers of adult and child-sized life vests will be provided. Volunteers who have life vests should bring their own. Wear clothing that can get wet and boots or close-toed shoes. River Sweep is a rain or shine event, so please dress for the weather. In case of storms or high water, event updates will be posted on Facebook and Instagram.

Preregister online. Participants under 18 years of age must have a waiver from their parent or guardian. Waivers are included in the online preregistration.

The Kentucky River Clean Sweep is sponsored by the City of Lexington and the Kentucky River Authority.
