On Sept. 7, Lexington native and internationally recognized, award-winning composer Shawn Okpebholo will join the Lexington Philharmonic in the premiere of his commissioned orchestral suite, “A Mighty Long Way,” during the 250Lex: A Concert for Lexington celebration at the Singletary Center. The free concert will also include performances by celebrated Lexington performers. Reservations for free tickets may be made starting today, July 1.
“2025 is a big year for Lexington, and we’ve spent the past six months celebrating our city and residents,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “I am excited to share the new composition by Shawn Okpebholo and his interpretation of what makes Lexington great.”
On September 7, the free celebration begins at 1 p.m. with pre-concert activities on the lawn of the Singletary Center. Attendees can enjoy entertainment from M’Power Rhythm, a conversation between Lexington Philharmonic’s Music Director Melisse Brunet and Okpebholo, family activities with the Carnegie Center and the Living Arts & Science Center, and refreshments.
In addition to Okpebholo’s commissioned work, the Concert for Lexington, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Singletary Center Concert Hall, will feature performances by songwriter and cellist Ben Sollee, R & B band Joslyn and the Sweet Compression, and the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, which will perform a newly commissioned “Anthem for Lexington.” Additionally, the Lexington Philharmonic will perform “Short Piece for Orchestra” by African American composer and Lexington native Julia Perry.
The September 7 celebration is free, but ticket reservations are required. Tickets can be reserved, starting July 1.
