Former Kentucky Auditor Mary Ann Tobin dies

Mary Ann Tobin, who pushed for efficiency in government as state auditor from 1984 to 1988, died June 22 at her residence in Irvington. She was 83.
As a Democratic state auditor, Tobin started a hotline to report fraud and set up the Economy and Efficiency Audit Division to root out waste in government.
Before being elected auditor, Tobin was a member of the state House of Representatives from 1976 to 1984, representing the 18th House District made up of Breckinridge and Meade counties. In the House, she was chair of the Capital Construction Oversight Committee and worked to update the state’s judicial system, automobile title laws and drivers license plan. She was an advocate for women’s rights.
Tobin lost a bid for the state Senate in the 1992 general election and placed fourth in the 2020 Democratic primary election for U.S. Senate.
A native of Guston in Meade County and a graduate of the University of Kentucky, Tobin focused on her family’s and personal businesses after leaving politics.
Her funeral was June 30 at Alexander Funeral Home in Irvington.
