Join us for Plastic Free July

News release provided by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government
For the first time ever, Lexington is participating in Plastic Free July! This global movement encourages everyone to play a role in reducing plastic pollution by reducing single-use plastic waste.
This initiative is about making small changes. It’s not about giving up all plastic for the month. The goal is reducing your use of single-use plastic – not perfection or comparing yourself to others. The most sustainable option is always the one you already own, so use what you have!
“Plastic Free July is the perfect time to make a small change by reducing the amount of single-use plastic in your life,” said Jada Walker Griggs, Program Manager Senior for Sustainability for the City of Lexington. “I plan to be more deliberate about declining plastic straws and using spoons instead of plastic coffee stirrers.”
If you’d like to participate, choose one single-use plastic item to replace with a reusable version. You could:
• Switch to reusable bags instead of single-use plastic bags
• Carry a reusable water bottle instead of using single-use plastic bottles or cups
• Decline plastic straws; go without or carry a reusable straw
• Carry reusable cutlery instead of using single-use plastic cutlery
You can also come up with your own idea.
Share what you’re doing by tagging @LiveGreenLex on Facebook or Instagram. Tell us:
- What did you reduce or eliminate?
- Was it easier/harder than you thought it would be?
- Did you encounter an unexpected challenge?
- Do you plan to continue after July?
We’d love to hear from you.
