The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky‘s next “Health for a Change” webinar is titled “Improving Health Literacy in Your Community.” It will be Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. ET. Click here to register.

The webinar aims to improve health literacy for the majority of people in the U.S. who struggle to understand and use information to make informed decisions about their personal health.

According to the Center for Population Health, “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines personal health literacy as ‘the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.’”

It is estimated that only 12% of the U.S. adult population is considered fully “health literate.” This means that almost 9 out of 10 adults are at or below basic levels of health literacy, according to a news release.

“Unfortunately, those who experience poor health literacy are also more likely to experience poor health outcomes,” according to the release.

The webinar will provide information about a ready-to-go training resource that can make a difference in your community, called “Health Literacy for the Win.”

The speakers at the event will be:

  • Emily Beauregard, executive director, Kentucky Voices for Health
  • Liz Edghill, director of Refugee & Immigrant Services, Family Health Centers
  • Michelle Hernandez, community health worker, Outreach & Enrollment, HealthFirst Bluegrass
