Lexington’s Division of Water Quality is preparing to undertake another sanitary sewer project in the Tates Creek Road and Gainesway area. The Merrick trunk project will replace 7,200 feet of sanitary sewer pipe along Tates Creek Road from Armstrong Mill to Dove Run Road.
“This project will start at the greenspace near Armstrong Mill and Greentree Road,” said Charles Martin, director of the Division of Water Quality. “Fortunately, the project will move up Armstrong Mill, so we won’t have to work on Greentree again.” Last year, a lengthy sanitary sewer project was completed on Greentree Road, with 6,000 feet of sanitary sewer line replaced all the way to New Circle Road.
Both of these projects are part of federal consent decree requirements for Lexington to improve its sanitary sewer system. The agreement, which was finalized in 2011, requires Lexington to implement a number of construction and maintenance projects to fix the sanitary and storm sewer systems. Lexington completed its stormwater obligations in 2021.
Lexington has completed 86 of the 113 sanitary sewer projects and wastewater treatment plant improvements required by the consent decree. These projects have taken place all over our community, in each of Lexington’s seven urban watersheds. Lexington is required to complete the rest of the projects by 2030.
