Lexington Council Seeks Public Input on Draft Bike Lane Parking Ordinance

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council is soliciting public feedback on a draft ordinance that would explicitly prohibit stopping, standing or parking in the city’s bike lanes, with a survey open through May 15, 2026.

The proposal stems from Recommendation 3.3A of the STREEET Safety Task Force, which convened throughout 2025 to identify short-term improvements to Fayette County’s transportation network across three focus areas: engineering, education and enforcement. The task force’s completed Action Plan called on the council to collaborate with the Law department, LexPark and other relevant agencies to develop the bike lane ordinance.

Council Member Dave Sevigny referred the matter to the Social Services & Public Safety Committee on Dec. 4, 2025. The committee is scheduled to take up the draft ordinance at its June 9, 2026 meeting, after which it may advance the measure to the full council for consideration. If approved by the full council, the ordinance must pass two readings before becoming law.

The public input period opened April 13 and runs through May 15. Residents can review the draft ordinance and complete the survey at Engage.LexingtonKY.gov/bikelanes. Council Members Tom Eblen of District 3 and Dave Sevigny of District 10 are listed as the primary council contacts on the project.
