Lexington Parks & Recreation, Mayor Linda Gorton, councilmembers, and families cut the ribbon today to officially open Cardinal Run Park North.
“Cardinal Run Park North is the first large, regional park our community has opened in more than 25 years,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “Regional parks play a vital role in Lexington – serving our entire city, as well as neighboring communities. They offer amenities you won’t find in neighborhood parks, and provide wonderful places to enjoy green space alone or with family and friends. Beyond recreation, regional parks create a large green oasis for everyone to enjoy, showcasing native plants and wildlife for people to experience and learn about.”
The land that is now Cardinal Run Park North and South was donated to the community in 1997. Cardinal Run Park South opened in the early 2000s. The government could not afford to make the improvements needed to open Cardinal Run Park North until 2022, when the design and improvements were funded through an allocation of $10.1 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.
“The 12th District is defined by its beautiful green spaces, and this park perfectly blends the natural with the built environment,” said 12th District Councilmember Hil Boone, whose district includes Cardinal Run Park North. “Cardinal Run Park North is far more than just adding acreage to our robust system of parks; it is a vital investment in the quality of life for our entire community. I speak on behalf of the entire District when I say it is truly an honor to have such an innovative regional park here in the 12th.”
