Water Week starts today! Lexington residents are invited to participate in a week of water-related adventures from March 20 – 29. Now in its seventh year, Water Week encourages everyone to find a connection to our local creeks through dozens of in-person, virtual and self-guided events.
“Water Week is an opportunity for folks to learn more about water and its importance to our society,” said Lee Moser, Agriculture Extension Associate Senior with UK’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. “I encourage community members to come to a Water Week event for an opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences that highlight ways to protect and improve water quality through the decisions we make in our everyday lives.”
Water Week opportunities include programs at City parks, such as a Salamander Spotlight at Raven Run, creek cleanups and walking tours where you can get involved with your local neighborhood association or watershed group, designing your own terrarium at the Arboretum, the Reforest Frenzy race to support local tree planting, a water quality testing workshop and much more. Individual and self-guided activities include participating in Creek Sweep litter cleanups and storm drain stenciling.
Tickets are still available for a free screening of Microplastic Madness, a documentary that follows a class of fifth graders from PS 15 in Red Hook, Brooklyn as they spend two years investigating plastic pollution. The showing takes place on Tuesday, March 24 at the Kentucky Theatre, 214 East Main Street. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the film beginning at 7 p.m. The screening is hosted by Common Threads LEX, a new sustainability-focused partnership between the City of Lexington, the University of Kentucky and Fayette County Public Schools.
