Humana and Eastern Kentucky University are partnering to address Kentucky’s health care workforce shortage.
Humana is investing $125,000 at EKU to create the Humana Scholars Program, to include $50,000 for nursing scholarships and another $75,000 to help reduce personal barriers for EKU students pursuing nursing degrees, according to an EKU news release.
“An investment in nursing education is an investment in the health and well-being of the commonwealth that creates a sustainable pathway for nurses who will serve our communities for years to come,” EKU President David McFaddin said in the release.
According to the Kentucky Hospital Association’s 2025 Workforce Survey Report, hospitals reported 2,821 open registered nurse positions in 2024, an 11.5% vacancy rate, with some specialties experiencing greater shortages.
“We know many people have the compassion and aptitude necessary for a rewarding career in nursing, but life’s challenges might hamper their ability to get a degree,” Kathy Driscoll, chief nursing officer for Humana, said in the release. “While traditional academic scholarships provide essential support, additional resources can enrich the student experience and help future nurses thrive. This enhanced support is intended to help students as they pursue a fulfilling and successful nursing education.”
This investment marks the second award this year under the new Humana Scholars Program. The first award was announced in February as part of a partnership between Humana and Jefferson Community and Technical College in Louisville.
This is also the second year Humana has partnered with EKU. The first award was used to build a home health simulation lab and to equip faculty with resources to help students who may be struggling with social needs.
“Together, we share a commitment to helping our nursing students overcome both academic and nonacademic barriers, positively shaping their lives and enhancing the health of the patients and communities they will serve throughout their careers,” said Brooke Bentley, chair of EKU’s School of Nursing.
According to the release, the initial recipients of the Humana Nursing Scholarship are Peyton Moening from Lexington, Odunayo Adebisi from Richmond and Emma Picklesimer from Flatwoods.
