Lexington opening grant to encourage beautifying neighborhoods, roadways

The Lexington-Fayette County Urban Government will start accepting applications for a grant to support the beautification of roads and neighborhoods next month.

The Neighborhood Enhancement Match Grant Program is meant to fund improvements to public property and promote cleanup efforts in corridors around the city.

Lexington-Fayette councilmember James Brown is chair of the city’s corridors commission. He says it’s a chance to include public input on how to beautify the city.

“We work to do a lot to enhance our corridors throughout the city, our major corridors and arterials,” Brown said. “But we can’t do the work by ourselves, and there’s no way that we can address every issue.”

The program is a matching grant, which means the applicant must contribute 50 cents for every dollar requested.

But Brown says hours of labor on a project can also be used as a substitute for money.

“That change was instituted to just give some neighborhoods with less resources more of a hand up in regards to doing some of these projects,” Brown said.
