Lexington’s 250th anniversary celebration will continue in September with several milestone events, Mayor Linda Gorton said today. “All year long, we have been curating a celebration that is for Lexington, by Lexington, and about Lexington,” Gorton said. September highlights include:
On Sunday, September 7, Lexington native and internationally recognized, award-winning composer Shawn Okpebholo will join the Lexington Philharmonic in the premiere of his commissioned orchestral suite, “A Mighty Long Way,” during the 250Lex: A Concert for Lexington celebration at the Singletary Center. The free concert will also include performances by celebrated Lexington performers.
On September 7, the free celebration begins at 1 p.m. with pre-concert activities on the lawn of the Singletary Center. Attendees can enjoy entertainment from M’Power Rhythm, a conversation between Lexington Philharmonic’s Music Director Melisse Brunet and Okpebholo, family activities with the Carnegie Center and the Living Arts & Science Center, and refreshments.
In addition to Okpebholo’s commissioned work, the Concert for Lexington, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Singletary Center Concert Hall, will feature performances by songwriter and cellist Ben Sollee, R & B band Joslyn and the Sweet Compression, and the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, which will perform a newly commissioned “Anthem for Lexington.” Additionally, the Lexington Philharmonic will perform “Short Piece for Orchestra” by prolific composer, conductor, and teacher, and Lexington native Julia Perry. Perry is known for combining European music styles with her African American cultural roots.
Although all seats for the concert have been reserved, it will be livestreamed on the LexPhil YouTube channel. youtube.com/@lexingtonphilharmonic.
The 250Lex Forward Bash is a chance to connect with young professionals and the young at heart who are passionate about moving Lexington forward. The event will feature live music from DJ Forerunner and the Bedford Band, delicious food, drinks and plenty of fun. Bring your ideas, meet new people, and help shape the future of Lexington.
