Phoenix Park lived up to its name today, rising like a mythical phoenix with new life.

This afternoon, Mayor Linda Gorton, councilmembers, Lexington Parks & Recreation staff, donors, stakeholders, and families cut a ribbon to officially open the new, reimagined Phoenix Park.

“We couldn’t be more excited to reopen this incredible park,” Gorton said. “Like the mythical bird that shares its name, a reimagined Phoenix Park his risen in its central location downtown – the historical center of our city. With these updates and first-in-Lexington features, it not only revitalizes this downtown park, but it makes it a destination for families to visit.”

Phoenix Park is located at the intersection of Main and Limestone streets, the historic center of downtown Lexington. This location once housed the Phoenix Hotel but following the hotel’s demolition, it became a much-needed green space in 1984. While there were minor updates over the years, this marks the first major renovation for the park – reimagining the entire space.
