LexPark leader explains reasons for parking citation hikes

The executive director of Lexington’s parking authority said there are several reasons LexPark asked to increase citation fees for illegal parking at meters starting the beginning of this month. Laura Boison’s request to hike them from $15 to $25 was approved by the city council and she said the extra revenue is much needed.
“We own three and manage four parking garages. Those garages, the average age is 39 years old. The Helix garage is almost 60, which most people don’t realize, because we’ve done a really good job at trying to keep them updated and viable.”
Boison said that capital campaign will cost 13 million dollars and the parking authority has already paid for other needed improvements.
“We invested $600,000 in the past 12 months for smart security cameras in three of the garages, the Helix, the Transit and the Victorian Square. And those cameras connect into the Fuchsia system to our Lexington Police Department.”
Boison said LexPark has not raised citation fees since 2008, and another reason for doing so is to address inflationary pressures of the last five years.
