Donations sought for senior flood victims

The Friends of the Lexington Senior Centers are accepting donations of items for seniors affected by the recent flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Donations will be given to the Kentucky River Area Agency on Aging which serves seniors in Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Owsley, Perry and Wolfe counties.

Drive-through donations will be accepted at the Lexington Senior Center, 195 Life Lane, Monday, Aug. 8 through Friday, Aug. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Notecards will be offered to donors who wish to write a note of encouragement for the recipient.

Specific items for seniors include:

Incontinence supplies
Nutritional shakes
Socks
Rubber shoes (crocs and/or muck boots)
Denture cleaning supplies
Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Bug repellant (OFF)
Gloves (non-latex)
Pet food
Puzzle books and pens
Reading glasses

“We are eager to assist our senior neighbors in Eastern Kentucky,” Kristy Stambaugh, Director for Aging & Disability Services said. “The items we are collecting are not being asked for or collected elsewhere. Senior adults are resilient and resourceful, so whatever we can do to provide relief is the goal.”

Individuals who wish to make a monetary donation (check only, no cash) can send checks to the Kentucky River Area Development District, 941 N. Main St., Hazard, KY 41701. Checks should be made out to KRADD, and the memo line should say “Senior Flood Relief Fund.” All contributions will be used to purchase appliance replacements for seniors, such as microwaves, washers and dryers.
