Records show 71 shooting incidents, 2 mass shootings in Lexington in 2022

Lexington, Ky. – Records retrieved from the Gun Violence Archive paint a picture of a violent 2022 in Lexington. An accompanying map shows the location of each Lexington shooting. There have been 71 total 2022 shooting incidents and two mass shootings (defined as an incident where three or more people are shot.)

28 people have been killed by gunfire, 59 have been wounded, and 87 total people have been shot this year in Lexington.

Lexington mayoral candidates weighed in on the problem at a forum in May, according to WKYT:

“We are focused on Lexington-specific solutions to violent crime,”

“Turning a blind eye to GVI is mostly saying we need to reinvent the wheel here in Lexington with something that we think is going to be better than what is proven to have worked across the country,”

David Kloiber

“We have got to have a comprehensive approach to reducing violent crime in Lexington. GVI is absolutely a piece of it. To say, ‘It’s Lexington and it wouldn’t work,’ I would say it’s ill-informed at best,”

Kloiber and Gorton will face off in the general election in May.

Kloiber, a Lexington Catholic grad and son of a millionaire software tycoon, stumbled his way onto the Lexington city council in 2022 when his incumbent opponent, incoming DA Angela Evans, dropped out after the filing deadline, allowing him to run unopposed for his seat. Now, after serving almost one full term, he says he is ready to be mayor. Attaboy, David.

Kloiber received 14% of the vote in May’s primary, compared to Gorton’s 71.1%

Update: David Kloiber’s team has agreed to allow him to sit for an interview with The Times regarding violent crime in Lexington. It is unknown if Mayor Linda Gorton will join him, but we’ll have a seat saved at the table for her, complete with a custom Lexington Times name placard.
