Lexington, Ky. – The Division of Traffic Engineering announced on Thursday that they will be decommissioning the traffic signal at Short Street and Jefferson Street on Monday, April 3, 2023, around 9 a.m., weather permitting. The move is part of the Division’s ongoing effort to study signalized intersections throughout the city to determine their necessity.
According to the Division of Traffic Engineering, the removal of the traffic signal will result in several benefits, including reductions in fuel consumption and utility costs to the city. Additionally, the move will reduce maintenance activities at the intersection.
After the traffic signal is removed, stop signs will be posted, and the existing signal will remain in all-red, flash mode for 90 days while travelers become familiar with the change. Traffic Engineering will request permanent decommissioning from the Urban County Council after the 90-day period if all goes as anticipated.
