Lexington leaders break ground on upgraded public park

Lexington leaders broke ground Wednesday on a new playground at one of the city’s busiest parks. Mayor Linda Gorton said the new playground at Gainesway Park, which is near three schools and a community center, is funded in part by federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars.
“Families and kids will be treated to multiple motion play pieces, more swings, everybody loves swings, and a new climbing feature. The playground will be more interactive and accessible than ever before.”
Gorton said four city council members, the Lexington Housing Authority and the non-profit Employment Solutions also contributed funds. The park is in Councilmember Fred Brown’s district.
“There are many improvements to celebrate here. In addition to the new playground behind us, a project was recently completed to improve drainage on much used paved trail here also.”
Gorton said the new playground will open in late spring. It’s the latest of a dozen improvements to Lexington parks over the last few years.
