Lexington VA to honor volunteers Thursday at awards luncheon

This week, Lexington Veterans Affairs Healthcare officials are recognizing the people who volunteer to help look after the men and women who served in our armed forces. Patrick Sinclair is the volunteer service officer for the Lexington VA.
“This is our National Volunteer Week. And this is where we recognize all the volunteers that come out and do all the great things for our veterans, whether it’s visiting them in the beds, in the inpatient wards, or as a greeter at the front lobby, or even driving the golf carts around Leestown to pick people up in the parking lot.”
Sinclair said Lexington’s VA has 100 to 150 volunteers who work throughout the year and donate 7,000 to 10-thousand hours annually. They’ll be honored Thursday at a picnic luncheon at the Sousley campus on Leestown Road.
“We celebrate our volunteers, give out awards, and we also have a Troy Bowling award that is named after Troy Bowling, and Troy was a volunteer that did over 70,000 volunteer hours – an equivalency right around 64 years.”
Lexington VA’s other campus, off Cooper Drive near UK, is named for Troy Bowling. Across the country, the VA is recognizing 25,000 volunteers who help them help our nation’s veterans.
