Youngsters and city officials gathered to break ground at a new outdoor play and learning area at the Family Care Center in Lexington. The center offers programs and assistance to families with young children. The outdoor play and learning environment will be funded from a $75,000 dollar grant from the PNC Grow Up Great program.

Yajaira West is the PNC Client & Community Relations Director. During a press conference she said this space will be about more than just playtime.

“We’re also excited about the role this resource will help and play and helping Lexington’s youngest learners discover the many wonders of nature and what nature can teach us.”

Sheila Horton-Holt is the Lexington Family Services Director. She said many of the children they serve have not been exposed to a nature based playground or learning environment.

“Parents are working and often do not have time to take their child to a local park. That is about to change for the children here at the Family Care Center. In our new nature based playground they will have the opportunity to enhance their daily learning activities with everyday objects in nature.”

Officials with PNC also presented lead teachers at the Family Care Center with $400 gift cards to purchase supplies for their classrooms.
