Empower Lexington Plan to be discussed in Committee
In Tuesday’s Environmental Quality and Public Works (EQPW) Committee, Councilmembers will hear about the 2023 update to the Empower Lexington plan. Empower Lexington is Lexington’s plan to become a more energy-efficient and sustainable city.
The 2023 update sets goals for how Lexington can become more sustainable across the following sectors:
-
Materials and Resources
-
Natural Systems and Ecology
-
Transportation and Land Use
-
Quality of Life
-
Water Efficiency
-
Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Each sector has a series of main goals to achieve, and outlines projects and strategies the City can use to achieve those goals. Some goals highlighted in the presentation include:
-
Establishing programs to discourage single-use plastics (Materials and Resources)
-
Increase tree canopy coverage to improve water quality and reduce rainwater runoff (Water Efficiency)
-
Identify areas to build more bicycle, pedestrian, and transit friendly infrastructure (Transportation and Land Use)
The Committee will also be presented with a resolution to approve the Empower Lexington plan. If this resolution is adopted, it signal’s Council’s support of the implementation of the plan’s goals and strategies.
You can view the presentation slides starting on page 31 of this packet, and read the full 2023 Empower Lexington plan update starting on page 55.
The Environmental Quality and Public Works Committee will meet on Tuesday, August 20th at 1pm in Council Chambers. You can attend in-person or watch live on LexTV.
