Update on LFUCG’s Paid Parental Leave Policy

In Tuesday’s General Government and Planning (GGP) Committee, Councilmembers will hear an update on the use of Paid Parental Leave for LFUCG employees.

Council passed a Paid Parental Leave policy for full and part-time City employees in 2022. The policy provides four weeks of paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child, and two weeks for foster care or kinship care placements. The leave must be used altogether within 6 months of a child coming into the employee’s family.

From July 1st, 2022 to June 30th, 2024:

  • 202 requests for leave have been granted.

  • 13 requests have been denied, largely because employees had not been employed long enough to earn leave (1,250 work hours).

The total cost of leave from January 2023 to June 2024 is $2.07 million.

Some changes are being proposed to the Parental Leave Policy, including extending the amount of leave for foster and kinship care placements to four weeks, and providing flexibility to the Human Resources Director to make exceptions in unique cases for employees.

The General Government and Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 10th at 1pm in Council Chambers. You can attend in-person or watch live on LexTV.
