With voter registration deadline approaching, numbers are up in Pike County

Monday is the deadline to register to vote in next month’s election. Pike County Clerk Darrell Pugh ran the numbers Friday morning and said voter registration is up quite a bit this year.

“We’ve got somewhere between 56 and 58,000 people in the county, and our registration is 44,955, so you know, that’s a that’s pretty high percentage of people that are registered to vote.”

Pugh said more than 23,000 are Democrats, more than 18,600 are Republicans and 1,400 are Independents. He said he believes most folks know Monday’s the deadline, but sometimes, there are complications that can threaten their ability to vote.

“You’ve got 30 days to change your driver’s license when your address changes, and then when you show up to vote, they’re going to check your driver’s license and your driver’s license and your residence that you show on the VRS need to match.”

VRS is the state’s Voter Registration System. Pugh said in-person absentee voting in Pike County takes place October 23rd and three consecutive days of early voting begin October 31st.
