Eastern Kentucky needs more doctors. That’s the word from the president of Eastern Kentucky University. David McFaddin recently spoke before the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce where he referred the lack of physicians as a crisis for the region.

The legislative measure to allow EKU to establish a college of osteopathic medicine this passed the Kentucky House last spring 92-0. McFaddin said he is working with community leaders to shore up further support.

“The reason we’re doing this is to serve the state. I think having those dialogues with those community leaders and making sure we’re on point and that we’re serving them. It’s a chance to talk about this program, but it’s also a chance to open the door and think about what’s next beyond that. We’re going to continue to have those conversations.”

McFaddin said he has a lot of support from the state government on this effort.

“The legislative measure to allow us to do this passed the House last spring 92-0. We’re working through the process where we’re working on a feasibility study, Deloitte is the contractor for that. Hoping to have some results from that in the next couple of weeks.”

McFaddin said this study will inform legislators when they gather in the new years. He says the support doesn’t end with the state. Policy makers across the region say this is something that would help alleviate the problem.
