Lexington curbside recycling to be put on hold in December

Some equipment replacement work along with structural repairs will prompt a pause in processing at the Lexington Recycling Center in December. The plant manager says the projects have been on the to-do list for a while.

Materials Recovery Facility’s Julie Hatter said the bailer will be replaced as well as a new tension fabric structure. Hatter said quite a bit of money was spent a couple of years ago to replace components on the multi-material bailer.

“It’s come to the point where parts are getting harder to find and it just takes a little bit longer and we’re seeing an increase in downtime, because of that. So, that’s why we’re replacing the bailer,” said Hatter.

Hatter noted the pace of bailing will likely increase with the new piece of equipment, but not boost capacity at the Recycling Center. The curbside collection of recyclables will end on December 3rd and start back on December 16th.

Hatter noted a backlog of recyclables is anticipated.

“We’re gonna get a lot of material once we re-open, but we’re excited to go ahead and get that processed because we want to take that material because it helps to reduce our carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions from material that’s going to the landfill. Those are valuable commodities in there that we want to collect those materials,” said Hatter.

The plant manager said the total cost to replace the bailer and the tension fabric covering comes to about a million dollars. Hatter said replacing the bailer has been needed for some time. And the same can be said for the fabric structure. Lexington Environmental Quality and Public Works is a financial supporter of Weku.
