The City of Lexington’s second annual Solarize Lexington campaign is winding down. The deadline to apply for the program, which offers discounts of up to 15 percent off the wholesale cost of solar equipment, is August 9. Chrissie Balding, an environmental initiative specialist with the city, said they’ll help people decide whether their building is suitable for solar panels.

“Things that we look at when we’re helping them walk through the process are, how old is their roof? How is their roof design? If it’s just a simple, straightforward roof, that’s a lot easier than something that has like gables. What direction it faces, how much shade they get.”

Balding said homeowners, nonprofits, small businesses and places of worship are eligible for the program, and a limited number of grants are available for low- to moderate-income households.

“The grant program is available to households that do not exceed 80 percent of the area median income.”

Balding said city employees will not call or show up on doorsteps unless they’re contacted first.
