Officials holding an event in Lexington on need for proper installation of children’s car seats

Improvements in child car seat technology have occurred over many years. And yet, if the restraint is not installed correctly, it may not be reliable in a crash. This Saturday a car seat check up event will be held in Lexington. Sherri Hannan is Safe Kids Fayette County Coordinator.
“It’s always been a high injury risk for kids. I mean crashes happen every day. So, we want to make sure that child passengers use the child restraint and use it correctly,” said Hannan.
After the child car seat comes the booster and then seatbelt only. Hannan says it’s a life-long exercise.
There are limitations when it comes to securing a child car seat in a vehicle. Lower backseat anchors began showing up in vehicles in 2014. Hannan said a seatbelt will restrain a 200 pound person while lower anchors hold up to 65 pounds.
“They will work beautifully up to that 65-pound weight limit. But, it’s only been tested to hold a combined weight of 65 pounds, car seat and child when using the lower anchors,” said Hannan.
Hannan said there still is a lot of misuse with car seat installation overall. The car seat check-up event will be held Saturday at the Safe Kids office at 2333 Alumni Park Plaza. A limited number of free car seats will be available.
