The fall colors found in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge include some green for area communities

The red, orange, and yellow colors in Red River Gorge trees can mean more green for area communities. Not in the grass, but in dollars moving in the Gorge counties. Powell County Tourism Board Member Jacqueline Townsend said her realtor activity gets a boost in the fall.

“Unlike most realtors where spring and summer are your busy seasons, fall is the busy season because that’s when they come to look at the leaves, fall in love, and want to buy a place,” said Townsend.

As a Powell County native, Townsend remembers for years experiencing busy fall seasons with packed trailheads and pull offs.

Also having experience at a wedding venue, Townsend said the timing is everything and nothing.

“They would want to have a September wedding, cause they wanted the leaves to be colorful and I would say…’well…that’s not quite September..that’s October…and it’s not guaranteed in October,” said Townsend.

Townsend said a lot of the prime lodging spots are fully booked for September and October. State Park Naturalist Robert Meyers said the leaf colors of red, orange, and yellow may come a bit early and a bit less spectacular, due to dry and hot periods.
