Lexington citizens urged to make transportation suggestions

Lexington City Council members are urging citizens to get information about and provide suggestions for transportation in the bluegrass community. A transportation expo will be held this weekend.
The Frontrunners Lexington organization is participating in the expo. A member of the LGBTQ+ walk-run group, Mia Ibrahim was killed last December in a car-pedestrian crash. Jason Schubert with Frontrunners said his group is pushing for more roadway surveillance.
“Red light cameras and speed enforcement. Right now we’re not able to put cameras up per state law and so working with state legislators to change that law to allow some sort of automated enforcement for those incidents,” said Schubert.
A transportation improvement plan was adopted this summer. Transportation Planning Manager for the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Chris Evilia said there’s a need for continuing dialogue and public input. He says feedback could impact funding requests.
Vice Mayor Dan Wu said transportation covers a lot of issues from pedestrian safety to traffic congestion to mass transit. Wu said LexTran faces a chicken-and-egg situation when it comes to providing additional bus services.
“It’s harder financial for organizations like LexTran to expand their routes or expand their service when don’t have the ridership. But, on the flip side there’s not better ridership because of some of the difficulties with the routes and the times of the buses,” said Wu.
Wu said additional investment may be needed to create bus system improvements and not waiting for more riders first.
The Transportation Expo is this Saturday from 9:00 to 11:30 at the Marksbury Public Library on Versailles Road.
