For the sixth time, the City of Lexington along with partner organizations is coordinating an expungement clinic and job fair. Organizers say a clean slate can be life-changing.

The event, scheduled next Wednesday at Central Bank Center, will offer residents the possibility of removing misdemeanors and non-violent felonies from their criminal records. Aretha Fisher has benefited from a previous clinic.

“Now today with filling out applications with the companies that have to run background checks, I have no worries of what they will see or what they will think of me because there’s nothing there to affect me anymore,” said Fisher.

Employers will be on-site to conduct job interviews. City Equity and Implementation Officer Tiffany Brown said the event can strengthen families and promote economic growth. She said walk-ins are welcome. Brown said the process not only clears a person’s record but also restores dignity and hope.

Christi Sorrell is the State Department of Corrections Assistant Director for Reentry Services. During Wednesday’s announcement, she said she wanted to make a statement to those considering attending.

“You are not defined by the actions of your past. But, the actions of your present and the actions of your future can redefine a generation,” said Sorrell.

The expungement event and job fair run from 10:00 to 3:00 PM next Wednesday.
