City of Lexington steps up services to homeless persons during heat wave

The City of Lexington is taking several steps to look after homeless persons during this week’s heat wave. Jeff Herron, the city’s homeless prevention manager, said Phase 1 of the Division of Emergency Management’s extreme heat plan was activated Monday.

“First of all, for any of our emergency shelters that might have requirements for residents to leave during daytime hours, we ask that they suspend that and allow folks to stay indoors where it’s cool and safe for them to be.”

Herron said there’s also assistance for homeless persons who aren’t in shelters.

“So we have outreach teams activated, mobilized in the community, checking on individuals, making sure they’re aware of the temperatures, distributing supplies like bottled water, sunscreen, shade, hats.”

Herron said LexTran is offering free rides to cooling stations in Dunbar, Kenwick, Castlewood and Tates Creek and these measures will remain in effect through Saturday, and perhaps beyond, depending on the weather.
